The Good, Peaceful Leader Comes

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year C, Old Testament Lesson

Scripture: Micah 5: 2-5a

This is the fourth Sunday of Advent, the four weeks that prepare us for Christmas. Advent means “coming” and the One who is coming is the messiah, Jesus. We remember and celebrate Jesus’ birth and we make ourselves ready for the time that Jesus will come again, when God will make all things new. The stories we hear in this season are from the prophets, who bring us messages of great hope and deep joy as we wait and watch and wonder.

Who is this child?

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year C

Scripture: Luke 1:39-45

Mary has simply accepted the message the angel gave her. Now she goes to the one other woman on the planet with whom she can talk: her elderly cousin, Elizabeth, who is expecting a baby whose name will be John. Blessed is she who believes. But what does Mary make of the baby in Elizabeth’s womb “leaping” at the sound of Mary’s voice? Who is the baby John? Who is this baby Mary carries?

What Then Should We Do?

Third Sunday of Advent, Year C

Scripture: Luke 3:7-18

Convicted by John the Baptist’s message, “Get ready!” the people ask, “What then should we do?” As we wait, how will we get ready? Yes, the packages have to get wrapped. Yet John invites us to “bear fruits worthy of repentance.” Perhaps we are being called to notice what we have received and choose what we will share with others. How will we choose to respond to the abundance we have received?

Prepare the Way of the Lord

Second Sunday of Advent

Scripture: Luke 3:1-6

The people who came out to hear John the Baptist would have recognized the Isaiah passage he was proclaiming. Did these people notice that something was not quite right in their lives? Apparently so, why else would they have come out to hear this bizarre-looking preacher? And so we, in the 21st Century, look for what we need to do to “prepare the way of the Lord.” What is cluttering up the path? Will there be room in our inn for the Christ child to come and be born in us?

Choosing to Notice

First Sunday of Advent, Year C

Scripture: Luke 21:25-36

While the world frantically shops, hoping to find the joy which is announced in the piped-in-music to show up in purchases, we are being called to STOP. No, not to zone out, but to stand and be alert for signs. The Psalm for today calls out: “to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.” And so we hold in tension the delicious preparations of celebrating Christmas with seeking moments of silence in which to be vigilant – to lift up our souls.

Do Not Be Afraid

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year B
Scripture: Luke 1:26-38

A message, directly from God, sent by an angel! No wonder the angel had to begin with “Do not be afraid.” And for whom is this message? A very young girl, engaged but not yet married. The message: “You are to bear a child, the Son of the Most High.” The angel makes a compelling case, the young girl chooses to risk accepting, and God is choosing to come among us as a human being – the word made flesh.

Who are You?

Third Sunday in Advent, Year B
Scripture: John 1:6-8, 19-28

The Gospel of John tells the story of John the Baptist from a slightly different perspective. Who is this John? John understands he is a messenger of the light – not the light itself. Those in charge of keeping the faith are confused. Who is this man? Is this the long-awaited Messiah – or Elijah – or a prophet? John sees his mission as baptizing, and pointing to the one who is coming after him.
