God Promises Justice and Goodness

First Sunday of Advent, Year C, Old Testament Lesson

Scripture: Jeremiah 33:14-16

Today we begin the season of Advent, the four weeks that prepare us for Christmas. Advent means “coming” and the One who is coming is the Messiah, Jesus. We remember and celebrate Jesus’ birth and we make ourselves ready for the time that Jesus will come again, when God will make all things new. The stories we hear in this season are from the prophets who bring messages of great hope and deep joy as we wait and watch and wonder.

Choosing to Notice

First Sunday of Advent, Year C

Scripture: Luke 21:25-36

While the world frantically shops, hoping to find the joy which is announced in the piped-in-music to show up in purchases, we are being called to STOP. No, not to zone out, but to stand and be alert for signs. The Psalm for today calls out: “to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.” And so we hold in tension the delicious preparations of celebrating Christmas with seeking moments of silence in which to be vigilant – to lift up our souls.

Advent Intergenerational Lesson Plan

Advent, Year B, Intergenerational Lesson Plan
Scripture: Mark 13: 24-37

Today we begin Cycle B, the second year of the three-year cycle from the Revised Common Lectionary. This cycle features the Gospel of Mark. It’s succinct, no frills, and no extra data. Just the facts as Mark perceived them. Jesus will come back – no matter how long it takes. The truth Jesus came to show us will not go away. When will Jesus come back? Who knows? “When” didn’t seem to matter to Jesus – just that we be ready.
