Here I Am

Trinity Sunday, Year B, Old Testament Lesson

Scripture: Isaiah 6:1-8

Today, we hear the story of Isaiah’s vision as he attends worship service. The country was in great turmoil and God came to Isaiah with a message. Isaiah is overwhelmed by seeing who he truly is and who those around him are in this vision. God reminds him that those things we do wrong do not prevent us from serving God and that we are forgiven.

We Seek Wisdom

Trinity Sunday, Year C, Old Testament Lesson
Scripture: Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31

This week’s text comes from the book of Proverbs, a book traditionally classified as “wisdom” literature. This book teaches us how to live good and wise lives. The passage in Proverbs 8 exalts wisdom (portrayed as a female character) and reminds us that she was with God from the beginning of creation. Furthermore, all are invited to seek wisdom, as she is found in many different places.

The Trinity

Trinity Sunday, Year B
Scripture: John 3:1-17

Learned leaders of the church struggle to communicate the concept of the “Trinity,” our God who is three-in-one. A learned leader named Nicodemus went to Jesus in the night to struggle with the concept of “born again.” We stretch for a deeper understanding of God’s longing for us and with our call to respond, as John 3:16b says that eternal life is for those who believe in God.

God’s Call to Us to Mission

Trinity Sunday, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 28:16-20

This passage is known as The Great Commission. It is Jesus giving the disciples authority and telling them instructions so they understand what their mission is in the world. The formula, “in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” is the Trinitarian wording that we all hear in baptisms and in our creeds. Today’s lesson focuses on how we are all called to live into the mission that Jesus set before us and uses the Five Marks of Mission as a guiding tool.

Discovering God: Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday, Old Testament Lesson, Year A
Scripture: Genesis 1:1-2:4a

The natural world is the best place for children to observe and reflect on the awe, wonder and majesty of God. The first story from Genesis is chosen for the Trinity Sunday lectionary because it represents God the Father as Creator. Some translations refer to the Spirit of God moving over the face of the water. This reflects the creative energy and power of the Holy Spirit. Although this is the first story in the Bible it was written later by Priestly editors to show God at the center of an orderly and sequential creation in which mankind has been given stewardship responsibilities that put him in partnership with the Creator God.

Trinity and Community

First Sunday After Pentecost: Trinity Sunday, Year C
Scripture: John 16:12-15

In three succinct sentences, Jesus continues to prepare the disciples for the coming of the Holy Spirit the Spirit of truth. God who is and was has sent Jesus who is and was. Now the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, comes to be with the disciples and to be with us. We have God in three persons — a community. This community is so huge it has room for each of us to enter into this Kingdom of God.
