The Lord Looks on the Heart

Season after Pentecost, Proper 6, Year B, Old Testament
Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13

We do best when we remember that God chooses us and calls us into leadership, and that our outward appearance does not matter. God sees what is in our heart.

Laborers in the Harvest

Scripture: Matthew 9:35-10:8(9-23)

Our reading today is part of one of the major discourses in Matthew and it comes right after Matthew shares with us a collection of Jesus’ words and deeds. In our passage, Matthew is naming the disciples and the sending out of the 12 disciples as laborers in the harvest. This sets up Jesus’ ministry of sending people forth in ministry and mission to love and heal those around them.

Note: Since this is a long passage, we will just be focusing on Matthew 9:35-10:8.

Be Grateful for What We Have

Ordinary Time, Proper 6, Old Testament Lesson
Scripture: 1 Kings 21:1-10, (11-14), 15-21a

This week’s lesson tackles some very difficult themes: greed, power, envy, and murder to name a few. These themes are intimidating when it comes to teaching children. However, the theme which redeems the lesson is the one which brings us all to God – forgiveness and grace. In order to round out our lesson this week, we will add to the lectionary text verses 25-29 in which Ahab sees the error of his ways and seeks God’s forgiveness – which is granted him. Even the worst among us are worthy of Grace in the sight of the Lord.

Seeds Scattered on The Ground

Season after Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Proper 6, Year B
Scripture: Mark 4:26-34

Jesus has begun his ministry; fresh with the capacity to notice abundance wherever he looks. But how to describe the richness of the Kingdom of God so people can grasp it? Seeds. Maybe that is it – everyone has seen seeds.

Forgiveness Leads to Gratitude

Ordinary Time, Proper 6, Year C
Scripture: Luke 7:36 – 8:3

Luke’s Gospel accompanies us on the rest of our journey this year. Luke fleshes out the parables and adds rich details not found in the other gospel accounts. Today, it is the story of the woman who is self-convicted of sin. Her relief at encountering forgiveness flows out of her in an extravagant display of gratitude. Are we so able to confront our transgressions, confess them, and then believe they are truly forgiven, that we, too, can dance our gratitude?
