Listening for God

Season after Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Proper 4, Year B, Old Testament
Scripture: I Samuel 3:1-10 (11-20)

The story of Samuel’s call can be humorous to us because at first Samuel does not recognize the voice of God. It is also instructive to us as we consider how well we listen for God in our own time. We are all called. Sometimes we need help to listen.

Sabbath

Season After Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Proper 4, Year B
Scripture:  Mark 2:23-3:6

We are now in the long season known as Ordinary Time, which runs through Christ the King Sunday. As we take this journey, nourished by the scriptures appointed for the season and empowered by our baptisms, we are invited to be on the lookout for all the blessings found in the ordinary – to see God at work here and now. And we are compelled to share our blessings with others.

Proper: appropriate, fitting, and during Ordinary Time, the scripture appointed for each particular Sunday. The scriptures for this Season after Pentecost all come from the Gospel of Mark. In today’s Gospel, we hear about the Pharisees challenging Jesus about the Sabbath.

God Listens to Us

Ordinary Time, Proper 4, Year C, Old Testament
Scripture: 1 Kings 18:20-21 (22-29), 30-39

This week’s Scripture passage is a story about the prophet Elijah, as told in 1 Kings. In this story, Elijah encounters the Prophets of Baal, who worship a God other than the God of Elijah. The prophets and Elijah have a contest to see whose god is more powerful. Though they pray and call on their god all morning, the prophets are unsuccessful. Then, Elijah calls on his God, and God burns Elijah’s sacrifice, even drying up the water that is poured over the altar. Through this act, people see the awesome and mighty power of God. Elijah’s prayer was answered.

Help and Healing

Ordinary Time, Proper 4, Year C
Scripture: Luke 7:1-10

In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus goes from calling the disciples to immediately healing people and teaching through his actions. In today’s lesson, we hear a story about a servant being healed because the centurion (a Roman army officer) had enough belief, enough faith to ask Jesus to heal his servant who he valued highly. The centurion knew that he did not deserve Jesus granting his request and he asked anyway hoping that he would bring healing. This is a story that is more about the centurion’s faith in Jesus’ ability to heal than it is about the man who was healed.
