God Answers All

Proper 24, Year B, Old Testament
Scripture: Job 38: 1-7, 34-41

Job has asked to speak with God because he would like to ask him many questions about his great misery. He has endured pain and grief from losing his health, his family, and his servants. Job’s friends have questioned his faith to God and Job has defended his beliefs. God’s answer to Job comes in an unexpected manner. God asks Job question upon question in a fast series of rhetorical inquiries. God questions Job about creation, the cornerstone laying, nature, and how all are provided for. God’s authority and source of all wisdom allows Job to gain a new perspective in his own suffering.

Servanthood

Season after Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Proper 24, Year B
Scripture: Mark 10:35-45

How in the world will we find our place, our position, our status, if we are already “in”? What if there is no top spot – no seat of honor? What if we do not have to compete for a place at the table – the place is already set, the dinner served, the wine poured? The disciples have been scrambling for position. Jesus tells them that the sign of being “in” is not about being served but in looking for whom to serve.

Giving to God

Proper 24, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 22:15-22

Once again, people who opposed Jesus and his message are trying to entrap him. This is the first of three exchanges between the Jewish leaders and Jesus. The lesson begins with them buttering Jesus up, and then asking a question that they thought would show that he was speaking out against the government so that he could get arrested. However, Jesus does not fall for it and calls them to the test instead.

God’s Presence in Our Lives

Proper 24, Year A, Old Testament Lesson
Scripture: Exodus 33:12-23

Today’s lesson comes after the story of the Golden Calf from last week.  Following on the heels of that story, we hear and exchange between God and Moses about God’s role in their lives and in the rest of their journey.  Moses continues to intercede on behalf of the people of Israel and remind God what God had told them in the past.  We hear that Moses wants a better understanding of how God works so he can serve God better and have a deeper relationship with God.  Moses asks God to be made clearer so he might better understand how best to follow God and therefore how to be a better leader.  Finally, Moses asks to see the glory of God to deepen the relationship and be filled with God’s presence and love.  As God passes by Moses, he cannot see all of God, but only where God has been.  We as humans never see God at work, but only where God has been, only where God was.  Those “God moments” are evidence of where God has been in our lives in order to deepen our faith and understanding in God.

Pray Hopefully and Constantly

Ordinary Time, Proper 24, Year C
Scripture: Luke 18:1-8a

Distilling the message of being faithful, Jesus seeks a way to teach his disciples: Do not give up! Do not lose hope! Perhaps Jesus, knowing the scope of God’s abundance says, to himself, “Ah, here it is: a story about a stubborn judge and a woman who does not give up hope.”
