Solomon Asks for Wisdom

Season after Pentecost, Proper 15, Year B, Old Testament
Scripture: 1 Kings 2:10-12, 3:3-14

We continue to remember Israel’s leaders and how they strived to serve God. Each had their own challenges and gifts. The need for faithful leadership continues today and we seek wisdom from how these leaders sought the welfare of their people and showed their devotion to God.

As we move from King David’s reign to King Solomon’s, we see that Solomon had different gifts, tasks and leadership style. Each man sought to serve God, each in his own way.

We Become What We Eat

Season after Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Proper 15, Year B
Scripture: John 6:51-58

Nutritionists will assure us that we are what we eat. Jesus, long before nutritionists, told us that we become what we eat. And so Jesus invites us to become one with him by eating his flesh and by drinking his blood. Our task is to trust that “whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Words from our Heart

Proper 15, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 15:10-28

As we continue the journey with Jesus and the disciples, we first get a lesson about what is clean and unclean. Jesus’ words are important for us all to remember – that our words come from our heart and what comes from our mouths speaks of who we are and our intentions. Following this parable, Jesus encounters a woman from Tyre and Sidon who had somehow heard of his teaching and healing. She comes to him, speaking words from her heart, showing Jesus that she truly believes even though she is not from Israel. He heals her because of her deep faith.
