God Fulfills God’s Promises

Fourth Sunday in Advent, Year B, Old Testament

Scripture: 2 Samuel 7:1-11; 16

Today’s Scripture comes once from the Old Testament book of 2 Samuel. In today’s story, God makes a covenant with David, promising that David’s offspring would continue to lead and rule Israel long after his death. The line of David would last for many, many years. We see this covenant fulfilled in the birth and life of Jesus, who comes from the house and the line of King David. This story reminds us that when God makes a covenant with us, God lives up to it. God always fulfills God’s promises.

The Good, Peaceful Leader Comes

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year C, Old Testament Lesson

Scripture: Micah 5: 2-5a

This is the fourth Sunday of Advent, the four weeks that prepare us for Christmas. Advent means “coming” and the One who is coming is the messiah, Jesus. We remember and celebrate Jesus’ birth and we make ourselves ready for the time that Jesus will come again, when God will make all things new. The stories we hear in this season are from the prophets, who bring us messages of great hope and deep joy as we wait and watch and wonder.

Who is this child?

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year C

Scripture: Luke 1:39-45

Mary has simply accepted the message the angel gave her. Now she goes to the one other woman on the planet with whom she can talk: her elderly cousin, Elizabeth, who is expecting a baby whose name will be John. Blessed is she who believes. But what does Mary make of the baby in Elizabeth’s womb “leaping” at the sound of Mary’s voice? Who is the baby John? Who is this baby Mary carries?

Do Not Be Afraid

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year B
Scripture: Luke 1:26-38

A message, directly from God, sent by an angel! No wonder the angel had to begin with “Do not be afraid.” And for whom is this message? A very young girl, engaged but not yet married. The message: “You are to bear a child, the Son of the Most High.” The angel makes a compelling case, the young girl chooses to risk accepting, and God is choosing to come among us as a human being – the word made flesh.

A Child Will be Born

Fourth Sunday in Advent, Old Testament Lesson, Year A
Scripture: Isaiah 7:10-16

Advent begins with darkness. In the days of the prophets, the Israelites looked to God for hope and promise.  The prophets began to speak of the hope and light that would be coming to the people of God.  Today we continue to share the stories of the prophets to remind us that we have been given this hope and light through the birth of Jesus Christ.  During this time in the calendar year our days are getting shorter,  and we wait for the light of Christ to shatter this darkness.  In Advent we are encouraged to stop and listen and hear what the prophets are saying.

God is With Us

Fourth Sunday of Advent, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25

Isaiah knew this day would come: a young woman and a baby — Emmanuel — God With Us. God chooses to dwell in the womb of a woman. A messenger is sent to assure Mary’s fiancé that he should stay with her and help her raise their son. Could it be that this message, God With Us, is not just about what happened then or just what will happen in the future? Could we risk believing: God IS With Us – Now?
