The Good News of Deliverance

Third Sunday in Advent, Year B, Old Testament

Scripture: Isaiah 61:1-4; 8-11

Our scripture comes once again from the book of Isaiah. Today’s passage calls for preaching the good news of deliverance; the prophet states in verse one that they have been sent by God to bring good news to the oppressed and to proclaim the year of God’s favor. In Israel, this year was called the jubilee year. Every fifty years, debts were cancelled and slaves were set free. The prophet preaches this message of peace and justice so that those who feel captive can be set free. During Advent, we prepare for the coming of Jesus, who brings us deliverance through his crucifixion and resurrection.

Rejoice! God Will Care for God’s People

Third Sunday of Advent, Year C, Old Testament Lesson

Scripture: Zephaniah 3:14-20

This is the third Sunday of Advent, the four weeks that prepare us for Christmas. Advent means “coming” and the One who is coming is the messiah, Jesus. We remember and celebrate Jesus’ birth and we make ourselves ready for the time that Jesus will come again, when God will make all things new. The stories we hear in this season are from the prophets, who bring us messages of great hope and deep joy as we wait and watch and wonder.

What Then Should We Do?

Third Sunday of Advent, Year C

Scripture: Luke 3:7-18

Convicted by John the Baptist’s message, “Get ready!” the people ask, “What then should we do?” As we wait, how will we get ready? Yes, the packages have to get wrapped. Yet John invites us to “bear fruits worthy of repentance.” Perhaps we are being called to notice what we have received and choose what we will share with others. How will we choose to respond to the abundance we have received?

Who are You?

Third Sunday in Advent, Year B
Scripture: John 1:6-8, 19-28

The Gospel of John tells the story of John the Baptist from a slightly different perspective. Who is this John? John understands he is a messenger of the light – not the light itself. Those in charge of keeping the faith are confused. Who is this man? Is this the long-awaited Messiah – or Elijah – or a prophet? John sees his mission as baptizing, and pointing to the one who is coming after him.

Everlasting Joy

Third Sunday in Advent, Old Testament Lesson Plan, Year A
Scripture: Isaiah 35:1-10

Advent begins with darkness. In the days of the prophets, the Israelites looked to God for hope and promise.  The prophets began to speak of the hope and light that would be coming to the people of God.  Today we continue to share the stories of the prophets to remind us that we have been given this hope and light through the birth of Jesus Christ.  During this time in the calendar year our days are getting shorter,  and we wait for the light of Christ to shatter this darkness.  In Advent we are encouraged to stop and listen and hear what the prophets are saying.

Are You the One?

Third Sunday of Advent, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 11:2-11

John the Baptist has been calling people’s attention to their skewed priorities and baptizing them when they got the message. Now, confined to prison for his preaching that made the authorities uncomfortable, John sends this plaintive question to Jesus: “Are you the one?” How do we answer the question? How do we choose to live out our answer?
