Prepare the Way

Second Sunday in Advent, Year B, Old Testament

Scripture: Isaiah 40:1-11

Our scripture comes from the book of Isaiah. Many times we associate Isaiah’s prophecies with the coming of the Messiah. In fact, the imagery of Isaiah 40 has inspired the creation of many different artistic and cultural works. However, it’s important for us to remember that these words were written to God’s people long before they knew the Messiah would ever come. Isaiah’s words of comfort and peace were written to God’s people while they were facing the destruction and pain that came from the Babylonian exile.

Prepare the Way

Second Sunday of Advent, Year B
Scripture: Mark 1: 1-8

John the Baptist, cousin of Jesus, dressed in camel’s hair and lived off the land, driven by the message he has heard from the prophet Isaiah, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” “Stop,” John is saying. “Look at yourself and your life. Make a fresh start. Begin again. Come, be baptized. Someone is coming to lead the way. My job is to point to that someone.”

A Branch Will Grow

Second Sunday in Advent, Old Testament Lesson Plan, Year A
Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-10

Advent begins with darkness. In the days of the prophets, the Israelites looked to God for hope and promise.  The prophets began to speak of the hope and light that would be coming to the people of God.  Today we continue to share the stories of the prophets to remind us that we have been given this hope and light through the birth of Jesus Christ.  During this time in the calendar year our days are getting shorter, and we wait for the light of Christ to shatter this darkness.  In Advent we are encouraged to stop and listen and hear what the prophets are saying.

I Will, With God’s Help

Second Sunday of Advent, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 3:1-12

The Prophet Isaiah could see the day when “the earth will be full of the knowledge of God.” John the Baptist saw clutter blocking the way to God. John pointed to the truth that through Baptism, we are called to seek knowledge of God, get rid of the clutter, and smooth the path on which we walk.

Be Ready for Messages

First Sunday of Advent, Year A
Scripture: Matthew 24:36-44

Keep awake, for you do not know when Jesus is coming back. This message is not intended to cause us to cower in fear. Fear provides a useful warning signal, but it can also have the potential to paralyze us. Instead, we are called to the opposite of fear; we are called to faith.
