The Associate Rector is responsible for sharing in the ministry of the church for worship, formation, fellowship and service through the preaching, liturgical, and pastoral life of the congregation as directed by the Rector.


Works directly under the supervision of the Rector.

Level of Independence/Supervision

Works largely independently, is expected to manage time and resources, attend staff meetings, and maintain office hours.


Works in close collaboration with the rector, other priests and lay leaders with resources from supporting lay ministry staff.


Compensation is highly competitive for resource churches, including church provided housing.

Principal Functions

• Regular participation in the Sunday and weekday services and presiding and preaching as assigned.
• Provide pastoral ministry for baptisms, weddings (preparation etc.), hospital visitation, shut-in visitation, funerals and conducting services for those unable to attend Church services with regularity.
• Regularly meet with fellow clergy, staff, Vestry and other committees as assigned.
• Teaching a course in the Adult Christian Education as requested by the Rector.
• Develop and support specific parish groups as assigned by the Rector.
• Participate in newcomers programs and activities.
• Provide pertinent information for parish communications’ mediums, i.e. Sunday bulletin, Trinitarian, Website, Formation Website, etc.
• Interface with staff in fulfilling pastoral service and seek staff participation and support in the performance of tasks.
• Attend Diocesan and local clergy gatherings, annual retreats.
Special Functions relating to Curacy

In addition to the principal functions above, there are special functions, benefits and expectations related to a termed curacy. Those include:
• Attending a Level I training in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd over the course of the first year of ministry.
• Attending a Clergy Clinic in Family Systems Theory through the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center over the course of the second year of ministry
• Discerning at the end of the second year of ministry/beginning of the third year of ministry a call to a more specific ministry as priest, whether a call to ministry outside Trinity-by-the-Cove or a changed ministry within Trinity-by-the-Cove.


The Associate Rector is to be a priest in good standing in the Episcopal Church or otherwise in good standing with appropriate Diocesan authority in the process for ordained ministry as a priest within the Episcopal Church, with experience in parish ministry, and demonstrable leadership skills.
