JOB DESCRIPTION: Organist/Music Minister (Part-time)

REPORTS TO: Rector

DESCRIPTION:
Working in collaboration with the Rector, the Organist/Music Minister will sustain and expand the ministry of music throughout the life of the church while ensuring that our Anglican heritage is reflected in all worship. This includes using the congregation’s musical gifts as a means of and aid to worship, leading the congregation to minister to each other through music, encouraging the fellowship of individuals and groups who share an appreciation of music, and fostering musical talents and expression among all age groups within the congregation. Additionally, St Luke’s is the home of the mighty 85-rank, 4-manual H.A. Howell pipe organ: sensitively voiced for the space, the instrument is ideally suited for English romantic and 20th-century repertoire, as well as Anglican service playing. All candidates must demonstrate fluent musicianship, familiarity with traditional Episcopalian worship practice is preferred, and an understanding of how to appropriately use such an organ – or at least a willingness to learn.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
● Plan, organize, and lead the ministry of music.
o Select appropriate organ and choral music for all worship in consultation with the Rector;
o Build repertoire and encourage participation of parish community in singing hymns and other liturgical music at services;
o Provide organ preludes and postludes for all worship services as well as other musical accompaniments as appropriate;
o Direct choirs in rehearsal and worship for both regular Sunday morning service as well as special worship services related to feast days (Christmas and Easter), periodic evensong services, and other occasions (such as Holy Week services);
o Raise the musical profile of the parish by expanding the choral repertoire to include varying time periods and genres, as well as by hosting musicians and ensembles to offer special liturgies and/or recitals; and
o Serve as organist for weddings, funerals, and memorial services as requested, subject to additional compensation according to the church fee schedule for such services (or assist with finding substitute direction and musicians when not personally available).
● Administer the music ministry program effectively.
o Manage the music library and work within the worship budget to expand existing collections;
o Maintain a high level of musicianship with regards to conducting, organ accompaniment, and organ performance; and
o Abide by all church policies including but not limited to those related to confidentiality, personnel policies, facilities usage policies, finance policies, and Diocesan required policies for the protection of children and other employees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Organist/Music Minister must see this position as a ministry to and with the parish community. A willingness to grow in faith and in this position as the worship life of St. Luke’s evolves is a requirement.

Specific experience should include at least a Bachelor’s degree in Music with an emphasis in organ and conducting choirs or demonstrated experience and proficiency in both. Significant experience in accompanying worship and coordinating music groups is required. The candidate must be able to work well with all staff, volunteers and musicians of all abilities to further our music ministries. Additionally, the qualifications listed below are essential for this position.

o Familiarity with and respect for Episcopal liturgy, worship, hymnody, and tradition
o Prior experience as Organist/Choirmaster, preferably in an Episcopal Church
