St. John’s Norwood is a thriving progressive Episcopal Church in Bethesda-Chevy Chase, MD with a culture of radical inclusion, and an average Sundayattendance of 475. A large portion of our church community includes families with children. With an attendance of between 130-180 children each week and a core of 34 volunteer teachers, our church school (ages 3-18) provides a nurturing Christian environment and spiritual education for its children and teens during the program year. We seek an energetic director to coordinate, nurture, and support the health of our church school. The director will also serve as the Children’s Chapel Minister on Sunday morning – a 25 minute worship service that caters to children ages 3-8 during the 9 am service. Attendance on Sundayand at children & teen-centered special events is required. The Church School Director reports to the Rector.

Duties and Responsibilities

Church School
• Oversight of church school program to ensure a healthy and safe environment for our children
• Annually recruit, train, and provide support to church school teachers
• Develop personal relationships with and provide support to church school families, children, and teens
• Provide curriculum and programming ideas and topics for volunteer teachers
• Actively welcome new families and connect young people to the church school
• Oversee the continuation of the valued traditions of our church school program including the Rite 13 ceremony and events, Christmas pageant, and J2A program & pilgrimage; includes coordinating and attending pilgrimage with students and teachers every two years (next pilgrimage is summer 2019)
• Keep the church school visible to the congregation by contributing frequent articles to our online newsletter and maintaining the church school bulletin board
• Collaborate with Rector to develop church school goals
• Teach classes as needed
• Supervise youth group leader and work with youth group leader to engage new members, and keep youth group program energized and attractive to teens
• Supervise paid nursery staff on Sunday mornings
• Attend weekly staff meetings

Children’s Chapel
• Lead Children’s Chapel weekly (year round) and recruit volunteers to fill in when absent.
• In collaboration with Rector, create an exciting and attractive program of age-appropriate liturgy and music geared towards the broad span of children ages 3-8.
• Recruit, schedule, and manage parent volunteers to assist with Children’s Chapel


• Experience in program coordination, volunteer recruitment, and training staff.
• Experience working with children & teens, and strong interpersonal and managerial skills
• Creativity in and commitment to Christian education in an open and inclusive church environment.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Health, dental, and pension benefits are available, as is an annual continuing education allowance.
