6/19/17: Priest in Charge (Washington Court House, OH)

What are you looking for?
Priest in Charge for TEC/ELCA Congregation
What’s the name of your church or organization?
St Andrew’s Episcopal & Good Shepherd Lutheran
Where is the job site located?
Washington Court House, OH
What do you want this person to do?
The parishes of Good Shepherd Lutheran and St. Andrew’s Episcopal have been working closely together for the past two years with a shared pastorate that recognizes the gift of Called to Common Mission. What began as an opportunity to respond to the needs of the individual parishes and facilitate their ongoing individual ministries has provided the means for the two parishes together to explore a future mutual ministry and depth of commitment to a shared mission for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Washington Court House and its surrounding region.

The two congregations, together, seek an Episcopal priest or Lutheran pastor who will serve with them as pastor, priest, and teacher and also continue to work with the congregations toward a future shared ministry. The congregations currently worship together. They still own and use two separate properties; however, conversations continue about what might be the best use of their buildings and the most prudent stewardship in this regard. Already, the vestry and council meet together for shared leadership. The leadership of the congregations have decided to consider the sale of one of the properties in order to better position them financially to move forward into their future together; this may or may not be completed by the time their next settled priest/pastor arrives. That person will need to help them navigate this change.

This is a remarkable opportunity for the right priest or pastor to journey with this developing Called to Common Mission congregation. There is strong lay leadership and a willingness to work together. The details need to be worked out and some sentimental attachments addressed. These are good folks who are interested in being a faithful liturgical Christian congregation and witness among largely non-liturgical local congregations. There is some generational diversity that is an important reality for them and part of what makes them who they are.

In their own words: “We are excited about what we’ve accomplished over the past two years in our common mission between Good Shepherd Lutheran and St. Andrew’s Episcopal. We look forward to more joint activities going forward. Our Coordinators in both churches are working together to plan in all areas—Worship, Education, Fellowship, Global & Community Outreach, Pastoral Care, and Evangelism & Church Growth. We see that combining our time, talents, and resources allows us to assist the community in more ways.”

This can be great rural living close to the big city with Columbus just 45 minutes north of town. A rectory is available or a housing allowance can be provided. The vestry/council expects the priest/pastor to live in Fayette County but may consider someone who lives just outside the county; the idea is to be part of the community of Washington Courthouse.
