6/30/17: Vice Principal, St. Barnabas College (North Adelaide, Australia)

What are you looking for?
Vice Principal (Theological College)
What’s the name of your church or organization?
St Barnabas College
Where is the job site located?
18 King William Rd
North Adelaide, SA 5006
Australia
What do you want this person to do?
St Barnabas College is seeking a full-time Vice Principal to join our learning community, to work closely with the Principal and Executive to further the mission and strategic intentions of the College.

The vision of St Barnabas College is encouraging people to know and love God through learning in community, thereby equipping them to serve the world in the 21st Century Church. The College is the training centre for the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide. Through its affiliation with St Mark’s National Theological Centre (Canberra) St Barnabas College offers theology awards of Charles Sturt University (CSU – www.csu.edu.au).

The Vice Principal of St Barnabas College is a research-active scholar and theological educator who supports and works closely with the Principal in strategic leadership of the College community, with a particular responsibility for oversight of all CSU academic matters, including representation of the College on University committees. It is expected that across the academic year, time will be allocated to research (0.3), teaching (0.3), and management (0.4).

In contributing to the strategic and academic leadership of College, the Vice Principal will support the Principal, The Rev’d Canon Dr Matthew Anstey, the longest serving Principal of any Anglican theological college in Australia. Matthew is an innovative educator, an international expert in Biblical Hebrew linguistics, and an energetic and innovative leader. Since Matthew’s appointment in 2010, St Barnabas College has grown from under four equivalent full-time students and a headcount of eight students, to close to thirty equivalent full-time students and a headcount of forty-seven in 2017. The appointment of a full-time Vice Principal is the next step in this trajectory of growth.

The Council of St Barnabas College, chaired by the Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide, The Most Rev’d Geoff Smith, has identified research as a key strategic objective. In 2016-2017 we have secured over AUD $115,000 in research funding, for projects on Lament in Scripture and Life, A History of the Anglican Church in South Australia (1985-), and Theology and Poetry. Further opportunities for research funding are being pursued actively.

St Barnabas College is distinctive among Anglican theological colleges in both its very close integration with the life and mission of the Diocese and Province, and with its strong commitment to the rich diversity of Anglicanism and the wider Christian Church. Lecturers have come not only from a range of Anglican traditions, but also from Baptist, Uniting, Pentecostal, Salvation Army, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Churches of Christ. The Vice Principal will play a key role in ensuring all learning at the College is undertaken in respectful conversation, with open and critical inquiry encouraged and modeled.

What do you want this person to do?
Founded in 1845, Christ Church Detroit is a vibrant, diverse, inclusive community in the heart of Detroit which, through its lively worship of Jesus Christ and witness in His name, serves the Christ in all persons. Our neighborhood is expanding as two large residential developments near us reach completion. With support and funding from the city for green space, infrastructure, and improved traffic flow in the immediate area, our location near the Detroit Riverfront is quickly becoming a major plus. We want to share what we have with our neighbors, and, while it may be true that many people don’t want to go to church these days (being more “spiritual” than “religious”), we believe that everyone desires a community that cares. We are responding to these opportunities and continuing our mission to be a “Beacon of Hope in the Heart of Detroit.”

In our next rector, we are looking for:
• a compassionate priest who is theologically alive and grounded in prayer;
• an energizing worship leader whose preaching connects with our lives and challenges us;
• an insightful and available pastor who appreciates the gifts and needs of our elder members, while also growing our younger membership base;
• a creative, community-minded leader to help us increase our presence within the neighborhood and city;
• an empowering leader, who can assist us in working together in ministry, with special attention to ministries that welcome and engage new members; and
• an approachable, good-humored teacher, who walks with us on our faith journey.
