Position Summary: The Missioner for Youth and Young Adults proclaims the Gospel and supports ministry with young people (grades 6-12 and graduated high school seniors), young adults (post high-school, including college students, through late 20’s) and the adults who work with them by building relationships with these constituencies, serving as a resource to congregations, initiating new ideas and bringing innovative programs and events to the diocese; works collaboratively with members of the Bishop’s staff and the various youth/young adult leaders; and advocates for younger people in the church, in the community, and in the world.
Employment Classification: Full-time lay position.

Accountability: The Diocesan Missioner for Youth and Young Adults is a member of the Bishop’s staff and reports to and is responsible to the Bishop.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

Building Christian Community with Youth:
♦ Build relationships with youth, clergy, and youth leaders in the diocese.
♦ Create platforms to connect youth, leaders, and congregations.
♦ Work with the Diocesan Youth Council and other groups to build opportunities for youth to lead and serve in the diocese and beyond.
♦ Coordinate programming, leadership, communication, and registration for all diocesan youth events.
♦ Coordinate participation in regional and national events for youth.
♦ Identify and support the ministries that are already happening within congregations.
♦ Be a presence in congregations by attending congregational youth events and worship, and
preaching on occasion.
♦ Cultivate and maintain a relationship with Camp Henry leadership.

Building Christian Community with Young Adults:
♦ Build relationships with young adults, including college students, and young adult leaders.
♦ Work with college chaplains and other leaders to build opportunities for college students.
♦ Discern and implement all facets of programing for any diocesan-wide young adult events.
♦ Create a platform to connect young adults, leaders, and congregations.
♦ Identify and support the ministries that are already happening within congregations.

Providing leadership, development, and training:
♦ Provide discipleship, evangelism, mission, and leadership training and opportunities for youth and young adults.
♦ Assist the Bishop and congregations in recruiting, calling, training, and nurturing young people and adults to vocations in ministry with youth and young adults.
♦ Offer professional consultation, programming, and support to clergy and lay leaders who work with youth and young adults.
♦ Follow the essential standards for ministry, including the SAFE Church policies.
♦ Study the current structures of ministry with youth and young adults and recommend new models for ministry and programs.

Qualities and Qualifications:
♦ Sincere commitment to Jesus Christ and an abiding call to ministry with youth, young adults and the adults who work with them.
♦ Educationally and theologically grounded in Holy Scripture.
♦ Able to think and speak theologically about youth and young adults.
♦ Visionary leadership.
♦ Articulate, passionate communicator.
♦ Ability to mentor and motivate.
♦ Ability to work under the authority and direction of the Bishop.

Education / Experience:
♦ Knowledge and appreciation of the traditions and practices of the Episcopal Church.
♦ Bachelor’s degree or higher.
♦ Previous relevant experience (i.e. work with youth, young adult, and/or higher education ministry).
♦ Multicultural knowledge and appreciation.

Professional Expectations:
♦ Serve as a member of the Bishop’s staff and represent the Offices of the Bishop and the Diocese of Western North Carolina in a professional manner.
♦ Organize and delegate effectively.
♦ Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
♦ Work collaboratively with colleagues, clergy, and lay leaders.
♦ Respect confidentiality.
♦ Submit and monitor the annual budgets for diocesan youth and young adult programs.

Work environment:
♦ Requires flexible schedule; willingness to work weekends and evenings.
♦ Must be able to travel and attend meetings and events outside of the office.
♦ Must be a self-starter and able to work independently.

Compensation: Commensurate to experience. This position reflects the benefits for full-time lay employment in the diocese.
