The Cathedral of the Incarnation is seeking a Minor Canon to develop and lead ministries with young families. The Cathedral is located in Garden City, New York – at the heart of the Diocese of Long Island. The Cathedral is a principal gathering place for the whole diocese and home to a strong and growing local congregation. With the leadership of a new Dean, we are placing in-creased focus on ministries with children, youth and young families. The Cathedral has a renewed commitment to offering a variety of weekly/daily liturgies and a wide array of ministries for all ages. We are looking to further develop our relationship with young families in the congregation and surrounding communities, increase worship attendance and grow our membership. To reach our goals, we seek an exceptionally organized and energetic priest with a contagious faith, who is a gifted preacher, meets people well, has a compassionate heart, is a good team player and has strong administrative gifts and follow through. The ideal candidate will have significant experience and success reaching out to children, youth and families, engaging them in congregational life and assisting them on their spiritual journeys.

Summary of Position Description
The Minor Canon for Family Ministries will be a full-time member of the Cathedral clergy team and will be the Cathedral’s clergy lead for program and pastoral care with children, youth and their families. They will be responsible for the development and implementation of new ministries in collaboration with staff and lay leadership with the guidance of the Dean. The Minor Canon will collaborate with the Diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry and the Mercer School of Theology (located on the Cathedral Close) and will be the primary contact for local schools and children’s organizations. She or he will oversee a newly envisioned evening family worship service and will lead and supervise christian education and formation for families in partnership with a part-time Director of Christian Education.

The Minor Canon for Family Ministry is directly accountable to the Dean of the Cathedral.

Nature and Scope of Work
• Work closely with the Dean, clergy, staff and lay leaders to organize and publicize a full array of attractive and transformative spiritual formation, support and educational offerings for families
• Create onsite Cathedral programs and tours appropriate for public and private school visits (architecture, art, local history, etc.)
• Coordinate and lead a family spirituality forum on a regular basis
• Develop programming and fellowship for new parents

• Plan developmentally appropriate worship services for young children in collaboration with the Canon Pastor and musicians
• Assist children and families in transitioning from the family service to other Cathedral liturgies
• Lead worship as part of the regular rota at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:15 a.m. (Sundays) and evening worship (Day TBD)
• Officiate as part of the daily office Rota

• Preach approximately every 6 weeks at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:15 am Sunday services as well as regularly at the new evening service. Preach and preside regularly at the daily Eucharist

• Assist in visiting hospitals and retirement communities as requested by the Canon Pastor
• Oversee pastoral ministry for families including pre-baptismal counseling
• Be available for pastoral counseling with parishioners

• Work with the newcomer/welcome team to welcome newcomers into Episcopal 101, membership, ministry participation, stewardship, etc.
• Be available for breakfast, lunch or coffee with newcomers or visits to homes
• Host and attend newcomer events with the Dean

• Work with the Cathedral Deacon to develop outreach opportunities for families
• Attend Cathedral Council meetings as requested to coordinate ministries
• Attend community events in Garden City and elsewhere on Long Island as requested by the Dean.
• Participate in recruiting children grades 1-6 for the Cathedral Choirs
• Other duties as assigned

• Attend major Cathedral events such as Annual Meeting, parish breakfasts, Memorial Day Fair, monthly Evensong
• Plan inter-generational fellowship opportunities with the needs of children and families in mind

• Ordination to the Priesthood in The Episcopal Church
• A passion for ministry and working with children, youth and young families
• A strong, articulate, contagious personal faith
• Self-starter, highly motivated, hardworking, organizer with a strong ability to execute
• Committed to a disciplined prayer life and the reading of scripture
• Excellent personal and corporate communication skills
• An ongoing learner, not afraid to make mistakes and take some risks
• Someone who is not afraid of criticism and is open to mentoring and feedback
• Ability to recruit volunteers to share in these ministries, train, delegate, support, hold them ac-countable, bless and thank
• Adept at using technology, including social media
• Strong team player with collaborative skills in a fast-paced environment
