2/23/17: Director of Music and Arts (Lancaster, PA)

What are you looking for?
Director of Music and Arts
What’s the name of your church or organization?
Saint James Episcopal Church
Where is the job site located?
Lancaster, PA
What do you want this person to do?
Saint James Episcopal Church in Lancaster, PA seeks a full-time director of music and arts. We are a large and growing parish in a historic small city undergoing a renaissance driven in large part by remarkable creativity in the arts and a faith-based commitment to philanthropy. We are a congregation and staff team that pride itself on innovation, excellence and breadth in our approach to everything we do from pastoral care to worship, music, and the arts. Saint James is a place of seeking, serving, learning and praying. We have as our mission to be a place where joyful worship, contemplative prayer, generous living and holy dying are the hallmarks of our life in Christ.

A busy weekend of five services could begin with sung compline on a Friday night with 75 attending; a Saturday morning funeral and a Saturday night mass featuring the music of Coldplay with 200 attending; Sunday opening with an exquisite Rite I mass and a choral quintet singing a Merbecke setting for 80 worshippers; ending the morning with another sung Eucharist by a choir of 25 for a congregation of 200. We believe each of these ways of worshipping opens channels for people to love, know and follow Jesus more passionately.

We expect a director of music and arts at Saint James to be a warm colleague and servant leader who loves the city and wants to collaborate with its many artists, and who is an accomplished performer who understands formal liturgy and the place of pop, rock, blues and contemplative music traditions in great worship. S/he will have the capacity, as both performer and curator, to embrace one of the broadest music programs in the country and develop it further using worship technology. While excellence in music and performance is important, so too is using the gifts, abilities, and formational power of music for children, youth, and families to participate frequently and meaningfully in the liturgy. A new pre-K school at Saint James means more opportunities will be created for young children to be introduced to music and singing.

The director of music is a senior member of the rector’s staff team working closely, not only with the rector, but as often with the associate rector, the director of children, youth and families, the associate for contemplative prayer, the choir, a part time organist, part-time minister for worship technology and the many other paid and volunteer musicians and colleagues comprising this broad department.

The total worship and arts department budget is $175,000, which is a significant part of an annual parish budget of $1.3 million. After a thorough consultation led by the retiring director of music, the vestry readily accepted the proposal to design and purchase an outstanding digital organ to replace a costly, fragile, and reconditioned pipe organ.

While justly proud of the national reputation our outgoing director of music has achieved for excellence, growth, and innovation, we are at a crossroads in determining how best to support continued growth using multimedia worship and technology such as Livestream. We are hoping for skills and experience of worship and arts technology as well as social media as a means of engagement and impact.
