Director of Music
St John’s Episcopal Church in Kingston, NY

St. John’s is a vibrant and growing congregation in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley where all are welcome in Christ. We value community, service, and fellowship as ways of loving one another as we grow in our love of God.

Worship gives us nourishment for our work in the world and music is an integral part of our 10am Choral Eucharist. We have had a rich tradition of music in our 175+ years as a parish. For the past 3 months, we have been working with an Interim Music Director to help us explore how we can broaden our range of music in support of our common worship, our desire to grow as a community, and our call to deepen our spiritual life.

We are currently seeking a leader for our music ministry who can help us continue our exploration while keeping us connected to our tradition of Anglican worship. This person will have the skills and sensitivity to serve as a unifying and energizing presence and collaborate the Rector, staff, and lay leaders to shape worship that honors God, invites experiences of learning and spiritual growth, and inspires us to love and serve God and one another.

We have a 15-voice volunteer choir, a Mason & Hamlin grand piano, an Estey pipe organ, and a 3-octave set of hand bells.

We seek an individual who:
• Demonstrates strong aptitude in the following areas:
o organ and piano accompaniment
o reading keyboard and choral music
• Exhibits reliability, flexibility, patience, grace, and a good sense of humor.
• Offers experience as a leader of ensembles who:
o invites participation
o plans appropriate repertoire
o seeks out ways to support the development of a wide range of personalities
• Has a working knowledge of most, if not all, hymnals approved for use in The Episcopal Church.
• Will be committed to the St. John’s community with a passion to grow our music program.
• Understands the choir’s role as liturgical leaders rather than musical performers, including experience as a song leader/cantor or experience identifying and developing leaders to serve in this capacity.
• Demonstrates musical versatility and a willingness to play (or learn to play) music from varied traditions and styles.
• Guides musicians and others in their Christian faith and encourages spiritual/emotional growth.
• Receives the gifts of others and encourages their development in the life of the community.

The Director of Music is a 12-hour/week (average) position that entails the following:
• Assist the Rector with the preparation of liturgy by collaborating in the selection of music for all worship in the church calendar (including Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Christmas Eve/Day celebrations). This includes an assessment of worship each week.
• Assist in the timely preparation of bulletins, providing music references, lyrics, etc.
• Direct the music program by:
o Playing and conducting as needed each Sunday at the 10am service.
o Directing the St John’s Choir and lead weekly practices (in addition to Sunday morning warm-ups), scheduling additional practices as needed.
o Intentionally including children and youth in the music of the community.
o Encouraging and developing the congregation’s participation in worship through music.
• Play an active role in quarterly Staff meetings and monthly Worship Committee meetings.
• Schedule substitute musicians as needed.
• Order new music and procure copyrights as needed.
• Provide music for weddings, funerals, and other events as negotiated on a per event basis.
• Oversee the maintenance of musical instruments and equipment.

In the coming years, we intend to expand the responsibilities of the Director of Music to include the following. Should we increase the responsibilities, an increase in salary will be negotiated.
• Work with the Rector to develop weekday/night worship service(s).
• Develop ensembles that become forms of evangelism, seeking to invite others into the community of St. John’s.
• Connect with the larger community of Kingston and the Mid-Hudson region through music by inviting musicians to join us as guests and producing performances in the church building.
• Work with the Rector to obtain grant funding if/when needed.
