Priest for Children, Youth and Family Ministries


The Church of the Redeemer seeks a passionate and experienced ordained Christian educator to develop, shepherd and evaluate formation and fellowship programming for our children, youth and their families. The Redeemer seeks a Christ-centered, highly organized, and diligent person to work collegially with fellow clergy, lay staff, and committed lay leaders to move these ministries from strength to strength.

The Redeemer is a vibrant church community in suburban Boston, Massachusetts. Our children and youth are valued members of our parish community in mission, service and formation. The Priest for Children, Youth and Family Ministries will work closely with the Rector to maintain and grow an engaging program set that serves close to 100 children every week. This is a full-time (11 to 13 block) clergy position position under the Diocese of Massachusetts compensation and benefits ‘curate’ designation. This position reports to the Rector.

Major Areas of Responsibility

Children, Youth and Family Ministry

Family Formation and Fellowship (Parents and Grandparents)

● Create networks of fellowship and formation for the families of our children irrespective of family composition.
● Creatively experiment in the creation of parent and caregiver communities.
● Work with the Rector to provide timely formational experiences for parents and caregivers.
● Maintain a generous spirit in the midst of a culture of high expectations and varied need.

Youth Formation and Fellowship (5th – 12th Grade)

● Review and evaluate formation and fellowship for these ages in consultation with the Rector.
● Create a strategic plan in consultation with the Rector for curriculum changes and programmatic offerings for middle school and upper school youth programs.
● Implement the aforementioned strategic plan for youth ministries by determining curricular needs and procuring materials and volunteers.
● Oversee annual confirmation cycle for 7th and 8th graders.

Children’s Catechesis (Pre-K – 4th Grade)

● In consultation with the Rector create a yearly Children, Youth and Family calendar.
● Continue implementation of Godly Play curriculum and acquisition of materials for these age groups.
● Recruit, train, and schedule volunteer teachers and substitutes.
● Organize periodic refresher trainings and fellowship gatherings for teachers and potential teachers.
● Periodically evaluate the Godly Play curriculum to ensure engagement and quality of experience.
● Order and manage all Church School supplies and materials including teacher resources.
● Coordinate any special activities or Church School related events (e.g., pageants, picnics, field trips, etc.)
● Work collegially with the Financial Administrator to set and track annual budgets.
● Work collegially with the Children’s Music program to allow flexibility for families and volunteers to participate in both programs.

Nursery, Infant and Toddler Care (Newborn – Toddler)

● Review all child safety procedures and protocols to ensure safety of infants and personnel.
● Supervise two hourly Nursery Caregivers for infant and toddler care.
● Gather parents of infants and toddlers for meaningful fellowship and formation opportunities in coordination with clergy staff.
● Recruit and train lay volunteers for nursery volunteer opportunities.

Liturgical and Pastoral Responsibilities

● Participate regularly in the weekly worship service schedule as celebrant and preacher at the 8am and 5pm services.
● Regular celebration at the 10am service with preachments approximately every 3-4 weeks.
● Leadership of daily worship as scheduled.
● Committee oversight as assigned by the Rector.

General Administrative Responsibilities

● Organize annual Church School registration.
● Prepare and update Children’s Ministries publications.
● Provide weekly updates for all parish communications.
● Maintain attendance data for all classes and provide data for report regularly.
● Lead the Sunday School Committee in monthly discussions and deliberations.
● Meet with the Rector regularly.

Expectations, Qualifications and Requirements
● This position is a 11-13 block full-time position for 12 months
● Primary responsibilities on Sunday morning will be with the children’s formation programming at the 10am hour
● Four weeks of paid vacation will be provided
● A love of seeing children as equal participants in the love of God
● Ordination to the priesthood or transitional diaconate
● Familiarity with and passion for Godly Play highly preferred
● Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Google Apps highly desired
● 3-5 years of proven children’s ministry experience preferred
● Collegial disposition with a desire to build vibrant Christian community
● Motivated self-starter committed to the vision, values and beliefs of the Episcopal Church and Anglican tradition
● Team oriented and able to work with a large group of volunteers
● Creative problem solver
● Highly organized with excellent communication skills
● Courageous in making telephone calls and building relationships
● Must successfully complete Oxford Document background check, CORI, SORI and Safe Church Training prior to official hire date
● Salary will be commensurate with experience as well as compensation and benefit guidelines of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts.

● Moving expenses of up to $12,500.00 will be provided with the Rector’s approval.
